The Volcom Fiji Pro was relocated to complete the remaining of round 1 and 2 and the three first heats of round 3 to lefthander of Restaurants for its 17 heats competition. It is the fourth stop of the 10 part ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) 2013.
Today, people witness some marvelous performances from the ASP top 34 as the 20 year old John John Florence scored a close to perfect score on the heat. He was stupendous in training barrels at Restaurant scoring a perfect 10 for the ride and backhand surfing fetched him a 9.8. This signals his return after the severe ankle injury that happened on Gold Coast. In his interview, Florence said that these were the best waves he had seen here, ever, and that you could sit in the barrel the whole day. He edged out Damien Hobgood in the round 3; the 33 year old from USA is a two time winner here. The 21 year old American Nat Young who is the rookie for 2013, owned Filipe Toledo of Brazil who is also a rookie. Making near perfect heat and scoring 9.2 and 9.03 looked at home at Restaurants.
The 32 year old Australian Joel Parkinson, who is the reigning ASP World Champion, missed the round 1 heat but came back strong scoring 9.33 and 9.1 to beat Dusty Payne of Hawaii in the round 2. Taj Burrow, this 35 year old fellow Australian scored the maximum for the day and winning two heats. He scrapped through round 2 against another Australian Adam Melling and then rode flawlessly against Fred Patacchia of Hawaii to take him down in the round 3.
Sebastian Zietz, the 25 year old Hawaiian came from behind in round 2 to win over Adrian Buchan from Australia. Jordy Smith, the winner of the Rio de Janerio event came back after a stumble in round 1 to beat Glenn Hall, the 31 year old rookie from Ireland to advance to round 3. Smith later defeated Kieren Perrow of Australia in round 3 to win he coveted 1st position on the ASP WCT ranking by surpassing the Brazilian, Adriano de Souza. This was no mean feat and Smith was proud of his achievement.
Kelly Slater of USA who is the 11 time ASP World Champion, took down the wildcard Aca Lalabalavu in the round 2. The 27 year old Australian Yadin Nicol created the upset of the day by beating the current world no.1, The 26 year old Brazilian, Adriano de Souza in round 2. Kolohe Andino of USA also created an upset by beating Gabriel Medina of Brazil, the 2012 Volcom Fiji Pro runner-up. Kolohe was overjoyed with his achievement that was clearly evident in his interview.
After the end of an adventurous and fascinating day, the organizers for the event will reconvene at 6:30am local time tomorrow morning to decide the possible return of the competition at Cloudbreak or continue at Restaurants.
