After two consecutive lay days, ASP World Championship Tour organizers finally called for round one of the Volcom Fiji Pro to commence on Monday. Just past 10:00am in the morning, the waters were crystal-clear with 4-to-six foot waves, offering idyllic surfing conditions. Even with these beautiful surfing conditions, though, there are were some serious upsets during the first 10 heats of round 1. For the latest scoop on round one of the 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro, keep reading.
As you may already know, Volcom Fiji Pro is the forth stop on the ASP World Championship Tour. Most of the pro surfers are still recovering from the intense neck-neck heat from Rio Dejanero, Brazil, which happened about 2 weeks ago. The latest ASP event, however, has brought them to the crystal-clear waters of Namotu Island, Fiji. It’s hard to describe the sheer beauty of this place without seeing it for yourself, but many of the surfers claim it’s their favorite stop. The 2013 Volcom Fiji Pro offers a $450,000 prize purse that’s up for grabs along with ASP ranking points and of course bragging rights.
Round One Happenings
Australia’s Mitch Coleborn retained his momentum coming off a wildcard win in Rio Dejanero, Brazil. During the Cloudbreak lineup, Coleborn nailed a perfect 10 from the judges, blowing away his competition. From the moment he hit the wave, you could tell Coleborn was going to come away with some serious points; however, even he didn’t expect a perfect ten. When asked about his performance, Coleborn said he was glad to keep his momentum coming off the wildcard win in Brazil. Since he scored first place in the Volcom Fiji Pro round one, he gets to skip the second round and go straight to the third. This is a huge advantage that gives him a head-start over his opponents.
Unfortunately, one of the biggest faces in the ASP World Championship Tour, Kelly Slater, was absent from round one at the Volcom Fiji Pro. After completing the ASP event in Brazil, he flew back to Florida for the birth of new nephew. Slater has remained there but plans to fly out to Fiji for the second round. Knowing Slater and his incredibly surfing talent, being absent from the first round will have little-to-no effect on this star. Assuming the weather conditions are clear, round two of the Volcom Fiji Pro is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.
