Next Stop: Billabong Pro Rio

April 23, 2013 By Admin

brazil-1As some of you may already know, the next event lined up for the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour is the Billabong Pro hosted in none other than the beautiful beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event is still over 2 weeks away, but it’s fans and spectators are gearing anxiously awaiting. If you are interested in learning more about the 2013 Billabong Pro, keep reading and we’ll give you the latest details on it.

The Billabong Pro Rio is scheduled to take place on May 8th-19th. With $500,000 in prize money up for grabs, it’s going to be a tense competition with the world’s best professional surfers trying to win over the judges with skills. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil consistently offers ideal surfing conditions with moderately tall waves accompanies with lots of sunshine. Each year, tens of thousands of people travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the sole purposes of riding their world-class waves.

Who’s Leading?

It should come as no surprise that Kelly Slater is currently in first place for the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour with a total of 11750 points. However, right on his tail is Mick Flanning with an impressive 1170 points, just 50 shy of Slater. It’s a tight ranking that means even greater importance is placed on the outcome at the 2013 Billabong Pro Rio.

During the previous ASP World Championship Tour event at Bells Beach, Slater hit a rough patch and ended up placing 13th. Although it was a striking blow to his points, he still held on to his first place ranking. Another 13th place finish in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will likely push him far away from first, so there’s definitely some pressure for him to perform well.

Of course, we can’t talk about the current 2013 ASP World Championship Tour standings without mentioning Taj Burrow who’s tied with Flanning for second place. Brazil’s Adriano de Souza is right behind the duo with 10500 points.

What To Expect at The Billabong Pro Rio

The 2013 Billabong Pro will begin on May 8th and last through the 19th. According to early reports, the surfing competition will take place between Barra da Tijuca and Arpoador, which are two of the region’s most popular surfing locations. As previously stated, the rankings are neck-and-neck, and the Billabong Pro Rio event can easily knock some people out altogether. We’ll have to wait a couple more weeks to find out what happens, but you can bet there’s going to be some serious surfing going on!
