The Hotel of Skate – Red Bull Presents ‘Last Resort: Aspotogan’

January 19, 2015 By J. Taylor

Last Resort Aspotogan 1

Every once in a while someone has a crazy idea that they actually make happen. So many great ideas come and go without ever reaching fruition, but this time the dream really came true. The guys at Red Bull decided it would be cool to transform a disused hotel into a skate park, and so it became a reality. In the depths of Nova Scotia, Canada, a luxury coastal resort hotel lay empty after construction was abandoned 20 years ago. A shell full of smooth concrete, ramps and rails… and that was before the park builders got to work.

How Red Bull Made It Happen

Red BullDirector Alex Craig called up some of the best in the business to create this skatepark utopia, namely the Zenga Brothers. The entire hotel was surveyed, all 175,00 square feet over three different floors. Using everything they found there and bringing along a few bits and pieces themselves, they created a Hotel of Skate. The place even had a custom bowl built, nestled among the rocks on the coast.

The 5-Star Skate Resort

Red BullOnce the place was ready to skate, it was time to bring the skaters in, and Red Bull invited some of the finest. TJ Rogers, Joey Brezinski, Ryan Decenzo and a bunch of their pals turned up to find their lines at this mammoth skate retreat in the middle of the wilderness. Fresh air, scenic views and some of the sickest custom ramps, rails and ledges to skate. The boys were handed it all on a silver platter, and they sure made the most of it.

Check Out The Movie

Red Bull even went one step further and made the movie they filmed free to watch and download, so no fans had to wait to get their hands on a copy. It was filmed in full HD and even has some sections filmed with an old school Panavision video camera with a fish-eye lens, giving some shots a real vintage feel. Just under 15 minutes of incredible skating at a location you’ve never seen before, and will likely never see again. Watch it now:

All Good Things Come to an End

Red BullIf after you watched the movie you’re already searching for tickets to Nova Scotia and planning your trip to this 5-start skate resort, hold your horses. Everything had to be deconstructed after the film crew and skaters left, included the awesome bowl that was made especially for the movie. Turn up now and it will all be gone, but if you can find the abandoned hotel there will still be something to skate, somewhere…
