The skateboarder’s annual public holiday! Well, unofficial public holiday anyway. No, your boss won’t say have the day off work because it’s Go Skateboarding Day, so book it off or take a sick day. On June 21st skateboarders from across the world will take to the streets and shred up local street spots, backyard ramps and skateparks. Make sure you get involved and help build Go Skateboarding Day into a truly global celebration.
Celebrating What it Means to be a Skateboarder
Whether you’re young or old, pro or beginner, Go Skateboarding Day is there to get you out and skating. As if you really needed an excuse to go skating… dropping everything and shirking responsibilities is something that most skaters are familiar with, but as you get older there’s more stuff that can tie you down. If you haven’t been skating for a while Go Skateboarding Day is just the thing to get you out of a rut and back on your board.
Back to its Roots
Who started Go Skateboarding Day? It was down to the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASB) back in 2004, who thought it was about time that skateboarders had their own day to come together. It was all pretty low-key at first, small gatherings around Southern California, with barbecues, skate jams and music. Over the past ten years this annual event has grown exponentially, and is now celebrated worldwide. From London to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur to Brisbane, Buenos Aires to Barcelona, and all across the United States. This year in 2015, Go Skateboarding Day lands on the same day as Father’s Day in the US, so all the skating dads out there have a double whammy.
How it Went Down Last Year
Year on year Go Skateboarding Day gets bigger and better, with big events organised by local skate communities, shops and parks in towns and cities all over the globe. Over in Bristol, UK, Supra Footwear put on an event with local skate shop Fifty Fifty, and here’s how it tuned out.
