Taj Burrow is one of the biggest names in surfing today. Although he’s never won first place in the ASP World Tour, he’s made several close calls including a second place standing back in 2007. If you’ve been reading our blog or keeping with the 2013 ASP World Tour, you’re probably well aware that Burrow is tied for third place and only 50 points behind Kelly Slater who is in first. But how did Burrow become such a phenom in the world of surfing? Here we’ll take a closer look into the life of Australia’s Taj Burrow.
The Early Life…
Taj Burrow was born on June 2, 1978 in Brusselton, Australia. He began surfing at an early age and qualified for the ASP World Tour when he was just 18 years old, making him the youngest qualifier in the history of the ASP World Tour. Burrow didn’t let his young age hold him back, though, as he performed incredibly well on most of the events. When the tour was over, Burrow can away with 12th place, which was pretty impressive considering his youth and inexperience with the ASP World Tour. The next year, Burrow once again qualified for the ASP World Tour. Instead of finishing 12t, however, he ended up coming away with second place. This was an amazing feat that shocked even the most experienced surfers out there on the water.
Burrow continued to surf and compete in the following ASP World Tour events. In 2007, he won first place at the Rip Curl Pro at Bell’s Beach and the Billabong Pro at Jeffrey’s Beach. These two first place finishes stabilized Burrow’s overall standing in the 2007 ASP World Tour. When the 2007 tour was over, Burrow once again went home with the second place trophy.
Burrow’s Style
Many people note Burrow for his unique surfing style that’s unlike any other. When he’s out on the waves, Burrow is almost certain to perform some barrel rolls as he spins through the air. Backside finners are another popular technique performed by the Austrian-borne surfing athlete.
Taj Burrow is sponsored by Billabong, DaKine, Von Zipper eyewear, Globe footwear and Nanotune.
2013 ASP World Tour
Taj Burrow is currently sitting in a comfortable third place in the 2013 ASP World Tour with 11,700 total points. He’s tied for third place with Mick Flanning, as the duo sit just 50 points behind first place Kelly Slater. There’s still plenty of surfing left in the tour, so it’s anyone’s game. Who knows, maybe Burrow will come away with his first, first-place ASP World Tour trophy?
