Weapon of Choice? – John John Florence Signature Futures Fins

June 3, 2016 By J. Taylor

John John Florence Signature Futures Fins

It’s no secret that John John Florence is one of the best surfers in the world, some people would even say he is the best. He grew up in an ocean-front house looking over Pipeline, professional surfing’s proving ground. By the time he was eight he was paddling out to snatch up the smaller ones, and by his mid-teens he was sitting out there with the older guys. Fellow North Shore local Jamie O’Brien recounted when he started noticing John John in the lineup. “I remember seeing him out there, and I’m thinking ‘God, he’s fucking young, he’s going to get drilled.’ And he did. But he never gave up.”

John John signed with Futures Fins way back before the start of his pro surfing career when he was just a grom. He’s worked with fin designers for years already, tweaking templates, fiddling with foils and testing new materials. Together they’ve had plenty of time to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

All that hard work has paid off too, with the result being the John John Florence Signature Futures Fins. What we have here is a set of fins that have become the first choice for a surfer who is constantly pushing the limits of what’s possible on a surfboard. But don’t take our word for it, hear it from the man himself…

So a bit more about the fins, let’s get into the technical stuff for a moment. John John Florence Signature Futures Fins are made out of Techflex, a material pioneered by Futures that is as stiff as traditional fibreglass but even lighter than Futures honeycomb construction. This rigidity combined with being ultra lightweight means they are perfect for going super fast and are good at controlling speed.

Another thing about these fins are that they have a flat foil, so they break free from the water quickly, perfect for boosting airs and whipping your fins out of a wave on a big hack. These fins have a Ride Number of 4.5, making them nice and balanced. Check out Futures Fins Ride Number explanation here if you want to know more.

At just 23 years old John John Florence still has a decade or two of professional surfing in front of him. No doubt we’ll see more tweaks and changes to the John John Florence Signature Futures Fins over the years, naturally progressing with his surfing ability. But can he get any better? Let’s hope so. Surf writer Brian Roddy summed up John John a few years back in a sentence that still holds true. “To be this good, to be this adored, to have his skills so acknowledged by everyone from Reynolds to Slater, is something of a wonder.”

So there you have it. If you only ever buy one set of fins in your entire life, make sure they’re a set of John John Florence Signature Futures Fins. You won’t regret it. Pick up yours from the DriftingThru store now, they’re available in Small, Medium, and Large.
