Surfing a sport that requires dexterity, agility, balance and the knowledge of how to connect your board to the waves. Without any of these elements, you are simply aren’t going to have success out on the ocean. Of course, there are also some common mistakes beginners make when attempting to surf. If you can’t seem to catch a wave, keep reading and we’ll reveal some of the most common surfing mistakes and how to avoid them.
Mistake #1 – Underestimating Current and Wave Size
One of the most common mistakes surfers make is underestimating the current strength and wave size. When you’re out there on the beach looking at a beautiful ocean, it’s easy to feel drawn in without taking the time to survey the situation. Once you get out there in the ocean, though, you may notice strong currents puling you further out to sea, or waves that seem to tower up much higher than you anticipated. The bottom line is that you need to watch the waves from the safety of the beach for a good 10-15 minutes before going out on your board.
Mistake #2 – Not Catching The Peak
If you plan on fully riding a wave throughout, you must learn to catch the peak at just the right time. Far too many beginners anxiously enter the wave early hoping to get a head start, but this tends to do more harm than good. Instead, wait around for a bit and turn your board into it once you see the wave peak. This will give you greater control and speed, both of which are essential for a good surf. I recommend watching some videos of pro surfers to see exactly when and how they catch the peak of a wave, as this will help you understand the timing aspect.
Mistake #3 – Not Getting Low Enough
Are you constantly falling off your board once a good wave comes? If so, try lowering your body closer down to the ocean after standing up. This will naturally lower your center of gravity, which in turn increases your balance. When it comes to surfing, balance is key to staying on your board. It may take a little practice before you are able to successfully stay on your board for the entire duration of a wave, but keep trying and you will eventually get it. You can also increase your balance by placing your hands slightly off to your side.
